Many people will tell you that the money is in the list. However, what they won’t tell you is that a few unsubscribe on every email you send. You need to expect that you will get unsubscribers. This is a natural part of growing your email list. Therefore, don’t get discouraged when people do drop off. If anything, they are doing you a favour because you are normally charged for your list size.

We are back with Brandon once more from KDMR Music. We now see that Brandon has 100 more subscribers since the last time he was featured on our channel.

Why Do You Need an Email List?

Ok, let’s get straight to the point. Why do you need an email list? Here are a few reasons why you need to grow your email list as a musician…

Keep in Touch With Your Fans

Your email list is the best way for you to keep in touch with your music fans, share your newest tracks and sell tickets for forthcoming shows.

An Engaged Email List is the Most Valuable Asset That You Own

An engaged email list is your most valuable asset. This is because you get more return on your investment (ROI) than you get from anywhere else. It is estimated that on average you get back 44 times what you put in. Therefore, if you put in $1 to grow your email list, you stand to make $44 in return.

Your Email List is Made up of Warm Leads

Once your crew have signed up to your list, they expect to hear from you. This makes them your warm leads because they expect to hear from you and they expect that your relationship with them is a two-way street. Therefore, they will get value from you and you will get value in return. This could be in exchange for goods, services, money or knowledge. As a part of my list, my crew know that they will get knowledge in return.

How to Grow an Email List With the Right Email Marketing Service Providers

There are plenty of email marketing service providers. Personally, I use Aweber. However, there are others who are just as good. I am not going to tell you which is best because in my view they are all as good as each other.

Let’s look at a few email service providers and I will tell you what I like about them and what I don’t like about them.

Aweber is my Email Marketing Service Providers

Aweber has everything you need and it now comes complete with hosted landing pages that look great and convert well. On the downside, some links are long and look spammy. However, you can hide this quite well if you hyperlink text.

Get Response is Another Option For Your Email Marketing Service Providers

Get Response is another option. They provide tonnes of great landing pages and they can help to build your list. On the downside, they are quite expensive. When I last used them, I had to opt for two separate subscriptions – one for the autoresponder and one for the landing pages.

I am unsure whether they still do this, but they always used to sell leads and emails for your lists too. This was something like $0.75 per lead.

MailChimp Email Marketing Service Providers

MailChimp is great because you can start for free and start earning from your email marketing before you have even paid them a cent (or a penny). This gives you up to 2,000 email subscribers. It used to be that you could only send something like 12,000 emails per month. However, this has now changed and you can have this for free.

Why Do I choose Aweber for my Email Marketing Service Providers

The biggest reason I choose to use Aweber is because they have better deliverability than anyone else. You can argue this point with me in the comments section of this post, but I feel more secure and more confident in Aweber as my email marketing service providers.

How to Grow Your Email List With Facebook

We know that Facebook is the place where our friends hang out. The platform has allowed me to catch up with friends I haven’t seen for over 20 years. Furthermore, most of my old school friends are there.

Therefore, it is the place where we can reach out to all these people and invite them to keep in touch by joining your email list. This will help you a lot. Not only are you building your list, your friends are more likely to be brutally honest. They will let you know if you need to brush up on skills in any particular area.

Invite Your Friends and Family to Join Your Email List

You can share your latest news with your friends through your email list. This could be to promote your latest range of merchandise, sell gig tickets or even just share your latest blog post. It is a great way of keeping all of your friends up to date.

All of the people who you initially invite to join your list should be people you already have a personal connection with. It is essential that you don’t just send it to anyone. Don’t post your link in Facebook groups. This just looks spammy and you won’t be valued as highly as you would want.

If your friends and family really care about you and your music, they will want to support you. They will be the first to listen to your music. If they like what they hear, they may also share your music with their friends and family.

How to Grow Your Email List After Your Friends and Family Have Joined

Your friends and family have joined your list? Great. Now you are going to want to open to other people to join. The power is in the size and quality of your list. Therefore, you are going to want to give people the most value you possibly can.

Everything you do should be with the aim of getting people onto your email list. This is the most important goal for the reasons already mentioned. Furthermore, your list members should know that as a part of your list, they can get things that they can’t get anywhere else.

How to Grow Your Email List With the Right Incentives

As a musician, the most obvious incentives for people to join your list would be an mp3 download. This could be a song that they can’t get anywhere else. Personally, I offer my book on music marketing. You can also give away behind-the-scenes videos that they can’t get anywhere else.

Your incentive doesn’t have to be a download. Why not give them a link to a private SoundCloud playlist. This keeps people interested in your music.
