Key Takeaways on How to Produce Music Online For Free

By the time you have read this post and watched the videos, you will…

  • …know how to make music online for free
  • …be able to download unlimited plugins, a DAW and all you need without risk.
  • …be happy in the knowledge that you can make music without charge.

Producing music online for free is entirely possible with the plethora of available tools and resources. Here’s what you need to get started:

Choose Your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)

A DAW or Digital Audio Workstation is the host program that you make music in. I use FL Studio myself so I am going to tell you how I do this from an FL Studio viewpoint. It should be noted that FL Studio is not free, but at the same time, there are free DAWs which will have a similar user experience.

What is a DAW or Digital Audio Workstation?

Here, I give you some options so that you can get a DAW for free. I highly recommend that you opt for a DAW that has a sequencer, playlist, mixer and one in which you can import any plugin you require. The video below will explain your options in greater detail. In my DAW, FL Studio, there is all of the things I recommend in a DAW and it is easy to use. I am not an affiliate of FL Studio. However, I believe they have the best and most appealing DAW on the market. The DAWs in the video below are recommended if you really can’t afford to splash out a couple of hundred quid on a DAW. If you can splash out the dough, I know that FL Studio is your best option. You get free upgrades for life inside FL.

Set Up Your Equipment

I am assuming that you already have a desktop, laptop, mobile or tablet on which you can make music. Maybe you have a family PC, Mac or Linux that you can use. If you don’t own the computer yourself, please make sure that you have the permission of the person who does own it.

You should also have access to the internet.

One of the biggest considerations when working with your computer is the amount of RAM it has on it. Computers are prone to stutter and struggle if you don’t have enough RAM. Therefore, I recommend that you have at least 16 GB of RAM on your PC.

Instruments For Music Production So That You Can Produce Must Online For Free

If you want to produce music for free on your computer, I can recommend that you look for free VST plugins. There are some great free options. However, there are also paid alternatives. The best plugins are normally those that you have to pay for. However, there are some that you can access, download and use on your music for free.

Your digital audio workstation should also have a number of stock plugins. These are both instruments and effects that come along within your DAW package.

Recording an External Instrument

If you play an instrument such as a piano or guitar and wish to play it on your DAW, you need an external microphone or an audio interface. This equipment will cost. However, some computers will have a microphone built in. The quality of the sound in your computer’s in-built microphone is questionable, but it is an option that you can use if you are unable to purchase an audio interface or a professionally-sounding microphone.

Headphones, Earphones And/Or Studio Speakers

The thing about using either a headset (headphones or earphones) or studio speakers, is that you need to monitor it for stereo width. You don’t really want all of the sound to come from one side and nothing from another. Therefore, to make sure it sounds right, this equipment will let you monitor the stereo width to a greater depth.

A good set of headphones or studio speakers will set you back a bit, but even a set of earphones will suffice if you really can’t afford anything better.

Learn How to Produce Music Online For Free

It is important to familiarise yourself with your free DAW. You can learn how to use your free DAW for free on YouTube. For instance, if you choose Cakewalk as your DAW, then you can learn more about it from the video below…

You can learn about any DAW and any plugin from YouTube videos and there are literally thousands of plugins that you can choose from. I have my plugins of choice. For instance, I use Dubstation 2 by Audio Damage as my delay of choice. This is for a few reasons. Firstly, it syncs to the tempo of my music. It also means that I can mould and shape the delay sound to exactly how I like it. The link there was an affiliate link. Therefore, if you purchase it through the link, I will make a small commission. This helps me to provide for my wife and son. So, a BIG THANK YOU to you in advance. You make this all worth my time.

Get Creative

You need to experiment with the plugins you have available to you. Also, don’t go out and buy the shiny new softsynth until you have learned how to use the software that you already have on your hard drive.

Having said that, there is nothing wrong with purchasing a plugin if you are really going to learn it and not just let it gather dust on your hard drive. You can get some interesting results with different plugins. One plugin that I got some very interesting results from was Stutter Edit 2. I was able to make the video below with only one sample. I hope you like what you hear.

Experiment with making your own samples and loops. Record your own sounds using a microphone or MIDI controller if you have one. Ask any producer friends if you can borrow a midi controller if you are unable to afford one. For all you know, they might even give you a midi controller for free. Many of us have equipment kicking around that isn’t used and we see the need to give gear away. I think the most expensive thing I ever gave away was a desktop Mac.

Just as I have done in the video above, you should experiment with different effects gear. See if you can get a beautiful soundscape with reverb effects. The video below shows you exactly how this is done..

Arranging Your Beats

During my time, I have learned many big lessons. Some of these have also included things like velocity and beat structure.

When you lay down a piano pattern, it sounds much better if you set the different notes in a midi pattern with different depths of force. You may want some quiet, while others louder. This sounds much more natural and actually sounds like someone has played the pattern (or is playing the pattern) into the computer. Therefore, the whole production sounds a lot more professional. The piano in the drop of the song below is created using this technique.

When you are laying down your drum pattern, you need to include a snare on the first measure of every second and fourth bar. This is the typical beat for a trance song. However, laws are to be broken so if you have successfully broken this law and your music actually sounds good, the world wants to hear it and so do I.

The best

  • Arrange your musical ideas into a cohesive structure by arranging different sections like verses, choruses, and bridges.
  • Use the timeline or arrangement view in your DAW to organize your tracks.

Mix Your Tracks:

    • Balance the levels of each track to achieve a pleasing mix.
    • Apply EQ, compression, reverb, and other effects to enhance your sounds.
    • Pan your tracks to create space and separation in the mix.

    Master Your Track:

      • If your DAW has mastering tools, use them to finalize your mix.
      • Apply subtle compression, EQ, and limiting to ensure your track is at a competitive volume level and has a consistent sound.

      Export Your Music:

        • Once you’re satisfied with your track, export it to a common audio format like WAV or MP3.
        • Pay attention to the export settings to ensure the highest quality possible.

        Share Your Music:

          • Upload your finished track to platforms like SoundCloud, YouTube, or Bandcamp to share it with others.
          • Share your music on social media or online communities to get feedback and connect with other musicians.

Remember, producing music is a creative process, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. With dedication and practice, you can create high-quality music without spending a dime.
