1. Optimize Your Profile

Your Artist Bio

Your Instagram artist bio should be clear and concise. Furthermore, it should also detail who you are as an artist and any current projects. What music do you make? Why do you make this music? It can also include snapshots of news about forthcoming releases. and Include a link to your latest music or link tree to various platforms.

Profile Picture

Your profile picture should be a professional image that represents your artist brand. It could either be a head-and-shoulders image of you or an image of your music logo. For the Krannaken logo, we use that big old K with the name Krannaken written underneath it.

2. Content Creation

IGTV

You can use IGTV for longer form content such as full songs, interviews, or detailed updates about your music journey.

3. How to Use Instagram for Musicians by Engaging with Your Audience

Interaction

Engaging with your audience is vital for building that relationship. Therefore, you must view audience engagement and interaction as a two-way street. Fans will more than likely comment and message you. I know that I feel honoured when an artist replies to a comment I have left. It enables that connection to flourish and your fans will love and respect you in return. Therefore, you must respond to comments and messages to foster a strong connection with your audience.

Collaborations

Collaborate with other musicians, bloggers or influencers to reach new audiences. I have said this quite recently, but there are two major reasons why you should be collaborating with other creatives. These include tapping into a much wider market as you are appealing to fans of other artists.

However, there is also the fact that you bring different qualities to the table. Perhaps you can play the guitar and sing, but have you ever considered using a keyboardist, base guitarist, drummer or saxophonist in your music? These can add a fresh perspective to your music.

Live Sessions

Host live sessions to perform music, host Question and Answer sessions, or simply chat with your followers. There are plenty of reasons for live streaming too.

Live streaming can help you to form a bond with your fans. It can strengthen a fan’s interest in your music. They can also help in the creation of your music. Maybe, you can create a poll so that your fans can help you to decide which artistic elements to include in your music.

Holding a live session can also bring in much needed funds. You can generate sales of your latest music, merch or tickets to a show. Maybe you can use Instagram in conjunction with Stageit and drive traffic from your Instagram profile to Stageit so that you can monetize your live streaming sessions.

Hashtags

Use relevant hashtags (#NewMusicFriday, #CoverSong, etc.) to reach broader audiences interested in similar music styles or topics.

There are two key reasons for using hashtags in your posts. Firstly, you can attract people who are looking for information on what you have to say. However, by using hashtags in your posts, you are also enabling Instagram to categorize your work. Therefore, your post will be displayed whenever a category is searched for.

Participate in trending challenges or themes to stay relevant and visible on the platform.

5. How to Use Instagram for Musicians With the Right Promotions and Announcements

Teasers

Teasers are a great way to drive interest for your upcoming releases or projects to build anticipation. What you need to do is to make a very short clip of the main earworm in your music. This could be a lyrical clip. It could also be a catchy baseline, dreamy arpeggios or lush pads. If you make rock music, you might make a crescendo which leads to an amazing guitar solo as the clip of your teaser.

Release Announcements

You need to use Instagram and other such sites to announce new songs, albums, or gigs prominently on your feed and stories. I will be making another post on how to release music in 2024, but for now, just know that your album isn’t about making one big splash. In this day and age, it’s also about making ripples with social media content before you make that big splash and then continue to stir the water with as many different videos as you can make to support your releases.

Ads

It may make sense to invest in Instagram ads. These can be targeted towards your audience as a retargeting campaign. Furthermore, this can increase visibility for important releases or events.

You should be aware that as a part of Meta, Instagram will also enable you to advertise on Facebook and Instagram concurrently.

6. Analytics

Track Engagement

Instagram’s analytics tools will allow you to understand what content works best and refine your strategy accordingly. Therefore, you can focus on what works and forget what doesn’t. It makes sense to focus on your strengths and any good analytics app will indicate where your strengths lie.

There are certain analytics that are mandatory. This includes things like audience demographics. Maybe you’re trying to focus on people in their mid 20s to late 40s, but are getting teenagers instead. What will make you more appealing to older people. One answer to this is that you could create a cover of a rock song, but in a trance or techno style. This will drive interest from people who remember the days of the original. For instance, I remember the days of Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer and Europe’s The Final Countdown. What is stopping you from choosing either of these songs and creating a cover in an electronic style?

Feedback

It is essential that you pay attention to the feedback from your audience on different types of posts. This will enable you to continuously improve and cater to their preferences. This feedback could be about an aspect of music that you hadn’t previously considered. Maybe you don’t feel 100% comfortable making working on this aspect. However, once you’ve been doing this for a while, it will be second nature and you will be able to produce similar and even more improved work in the future.

7. Consistency and Branding

Visual Aesthetic

As sight-impaired artists, we don’t really consider our visuals a lot. However, it is still important to maintain a consistent visual style and theme in our posts and in our music to strengthen your brand identity.

Thinking about it now, there are several areas where we do create visual work that I hadn’t considered. If you look at all of the featured images we use in our blog posts, you will see a consistent style. Likewise, there is a consistent style in our video thumbnails on both Krannaken TV and on the Krannaken Music Channel.

Other electronic musicians tend to use a thumbnail with a simple logo on and nothing else. This denotes that it is from a particular artist. For instance, you will see John Gold’s logo on his music videos…

Therefore, we have used a simple logo on our music videos such as the one below…

Posting Schedule

It is also important to keep a regular posting schedule to keep your followers engaged and interested in your content. This will keep your music and what you do to promote it, fresh in the minds of your fans. Therefore, your name will become synonymous with your genre of music. When your fan thinks of your genre, they will think of you.

By using Instagram strategically, you can effectively enhance your visibility as a musician, connect more deeply with your fans, and grow your career.
